History of Eid Ul Fitr & Origin of Eid Al Fitr
As per the Muslim (Islamic) tradition, in the year 610 A.D Prophet Muhammad at age of 40 years old was doing meditation in the Hira in the month of Ramadan. One night he had a vision of the angel Gabriel also known as Jibril appearing before him telling his name to Muhammad declaring to the latter that he was the messenger of God.
The meaning of “Iqraa” is to “Read” or “Recite”.
That mean Gabriel told Prophet Muhhamad to recite on which Muhammad replied that I Could not recite. Gabriel again asked Muhammad to recite and he again denied. Gabriel again hugged the Prophet and asked him to recite what he said. He just told him
“Recite in the name of your Lord Who creates.
Creates man from a clot.
Recite: And your Lord is the Most Bountiful
Who teaches by the pen,
He teaches man what he does not know.”
Creates man from a clot.
Recite: And your Lord is the Most Bountiful
Who teaches by the pen,
He teaches man what he does not know.”
In that meeting with Gabriel, the angel (Gabriel) told the prophet Muhammad that he was the Messenger of the God (Allah ) and he will be the Paigamber (Prophet) for all the people. With this meeting with the Gabriel, Prophet Muhammad was very much disturbed and distracted. It is an old belief that Prophet Muhammad first considered the Gabriel as the Evil Sprit. Then the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad Khadijah, who make him calm also an old cousin of Khadijah, Waraqa ibn Nawfal convinced him that you (Prophet Muhammad ) are the messenger of God and the angel (Gabriel) who visited the Prophet Muhammad was the one had also visited the Hebrew prophet Moses.
After this event in the next 23 years, Gabriel (the angel) visited the Prophet Muhammad many times and gave him the holy knowledge. The knowledge provided by the Gabriel includes the code of conduct that God (Allah) wants from his people living on the earth. It is inscribed in verses which are compiled in the holy Qur’an, the most sacred book in Islam.
